Positive policing, positive communities in Totnes

Police officers from Totnes have created a recognisable emblem that endorses close working relations between the Police and local communities. The emblem aims to encourage positive working between partner agencies, local businesses, community members and the police.

The initiative is part of the teams’ aim to reduce crime and anti social behaviour in the town.

Positive policing stickers placed in prominent places act as a ‘marker’ that encourages positive activity in the area, encompassing both residential and commercial properties.

It incorporates the strong message ‘‘Positive policing, positive communities’ and lists acceptable and non-acceptable behaviours welcomed across the town.

Developed by PCSOs Jason Vasey and Gemma Finch, it endorses regular police patrol, crime reduction schemes and community involvement.

It says ‘no’ to anti social behaviour, burglary, theft, criminal damage and drug and substance misuse.

“We hope the emblem will raise awareness of community issues and empower individuals to support the local policing objectives by working together,” said PCSO Vasey.

If anyone would like to display a positive policing sticker, they can telephone PCSOs Jason Vasey or Gemma Finch on Tel 101.

The campaign urges anyone to report suspicious or anti social behaviour immediately to the Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Victim statement following sentencing of Shane Jenkin

Shane Jenkin, 33, was today, Friday, 11 May, given an indefinite life sentence with a hospital order at Truro Crown Court for greivous bodily harm.

Following the hearing, his victim, Tina Nash, released the following statement:

“I have waited a year and three weeks for this day

“It was a week short of a year before Shane decided to plead guilty to grievous bodily harm with intent although he and I know that he tried to kill me that night.

“This delay I believe to be deliberate as Shane hoped I would give in and back out as I had done previously, and he was happy in the knowledge that he was still controlling my life by doing so.

“During this year my life has been in limbo as I have not been able to have the treatment and counselling I so desperately needed whilst Shane has had a team of experts, professionals and psychiatrists assessing and ensuring his well being and that he received the treatment that he required.

“Shane was not mentally ill when he attacked me, he was not drunk or under the influence of drugs. It was a silent prolonged attack. Shane knows what he did to me that night and he has to live with that for the rest of his life.

“My life changed forever that night and will never be the same but I am now able to move on, start my treatment and rebuild my life. I have a future and want to provide a future for my kids and be a good mum.

“I have been overwhelmed and moved by all the kind messages, offers of help and generous gifts I have received and would like to say thank you to everyone.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Police, in particular Inspector Strickland, Sergeant Jones, DC Simcox and PC Turner. My Barrister Mr Mcfarlane and My IDVA Anna Onslow.

“I urge anyone out there suffering Domestic Abuse to contact the Police before it is too late. Don’t be frightened or embarrassed, there are specially trained officers who can and will help you. If you really feel unable to contact the Police there are charities and support groups such as West Cornwall Women’s Aid who will help, advise and support you in doing so.”
